5 Cheap and Easy Ways to Make Your Home More Cheery
We have written at length about home improvement projects to give your home a bit of a face-lift, but some of those projects are expensive and time consuming. This week we wanted to give you some ideas that you can do on a budget without taking up a bunch of time.
- Paint the front door
We have talked about this before, if you haven’t done it already you should take some time to figure out a color and get it done. This is one of the least expensive and easiest ways to make a big change to the look of your home. As long as you carefully select a color and appropriate paint type, this is one of the quickest ways to get a lasting feeling of accomplishment. If you want to make a big change, paint the rest of the house while you’re in the groove. That does get a bit more expensive and time consuming though.
- Replace cabinet hardware
This may be the best suggestion if you are not confident in your DIY abilities. New hardware is relatively inexpensive and generally only requires the turn of a screwdriver. You can change the look of your kitchen and/or bathrooms with this one simple trick.
- Replace light switch covers
They tend to yellow or fade over time. You don’t have to be an electrician to swap out the covers. Not very expensive at all and gives a great fresh look to the room. You already have your screwdriver out after finishing the 2nd idea.
- Change or paint door handles
Sticking with the theme so far, the only tool needed is a screwdriver. Go with matte or metallic colors, this is not the time for neon yellow. Just about anything is better than the old brass hardware installed by the contractor a couple decades ago. The cheapest way to achieve the look is a can of spray paint and some patience. Don’t try to get full coverage on the first coat.
- Pressure wash
In our hot and humid climate, textured surfaces collect algae and grime quickly. A professional pressure washer is best, but a simple hose attachment and good water pressure may get the job done. It is also really satisfying to blast away all that crud to reveal the beautiful surface beneath. Make sure you are careful around windows, if you compromise the seals you could fog the windows and end up with some accidentally frosted glass where it doesn’t belong.
