Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Posted in #ProTipTuesday on February 19, 2019 by Christian Stahl

There comes a point in many of our lives when your needs change and your home doesn’t fit like it used to. If/when this happens in your life, you have a few options. Stay and make the house conform to your needs, sell and buy a house that is better suited, or buy a new house and rent out the current one.

Your specific criteria and situation may make this choice for you. Here are some things to consider.

Remodeling makes sense when:

  1. You love your neighbors, neighborhood, location, etc.
  2. You love the schools and teachers you are currently zoned for.
  3. You have very specific needs that can only be addressed by making the changes yourself.
  4. You’re not bored with your current home.
  5. The necessary modifications can actually be done to your home.
  6. You don’t want to go through the moving process.
  7. You wouldn’t mind living in the home while construction is completed.

Relocating makes sense when:

  1. You want a fresh start in a new neighborhood.
  2. You want new or better schools.
  3. You are planning to build a new home and can make it your own from the beginning.
  4. You are bored with or don’t like your current home.
  5. Your current home doesn’t have the space or ability to be modified to fit your needs.
  6. You don’t want to deal with contractors.
  7. You don’t want to live in a construction project.

Before making the decision one way or the other reach out to your trusted Realtor. We can determine if it is likely that you will get a decent return on your investment before making drastic and expensive changes. Some changes offer little to no return. You might have a significant amount of equity in your home, selling and moving may or may not be worth your while. We have a great network of trusted professionals that can help along the way whichever path you choose.
